A group of fifteen small people attracted a big audience in Bukoba town and rural area on a weekend in May. It was a pygmy choir from the Democratic Republic of Congo and its entourage who were on a four weeks trip through Tanzania which was organised by the Africa Regional Office of the United Evangelical Mission (UEM).
During its journey, the choir sang and preached in different congregations in Tanzania and therefore also visited the North Western Diocese.

The North Western Diocese (NWD) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania plans to establish the University College that will be known as the Josiah Kibira University College (JoKUCo) of Tumaini University (TU). This University College will be formed by transforming the Bukoba Lutheran Teachers’ College (BLTC) which is located 9 Km North of the Bukoba Municipal, near Nyakato Secondary School. It is planned that JoKUCo will be inaugurated in June 2010 when the North Western Diocese (NWD) will be celebrating a centenary of Christianity in the Kagera Region.

The aim of establishing the University College is to address the demand for higher education in the country following the increasing number of secondary schools in Tanzania plus the demand of those who want to further their education.

The kindergarten at Kashura Women Centre has a new sandbox for the children to play in when they are outside. The kindergarten caters for 36 children ages 3 to 5.  It was a private donor that made it possible to build this sandbox, and when looking at the excited faces of the children and observing their engaged play with the sand, this sandbox is already a success.

When asking Sr. Sarapia Katura, the teacher in charge, about what the children can learn from playing with the sand, her response was:

There are so many areas where sand and playing in a sandbox is stimulating and developing for our children. First of all the sandbox allows the children to engage themselves in manipulative play. While doing that, one of the things they develop is the hand – eye coordination. The sand challenges children’s tactile sense which we also call the sense of touch and while doing that, they develop an understanding for concepts like wet, dry, sticky, cold, dirty and so on.

At Kashura parish, one of the largest in the diocese, the youth choir has had problems with a diminishing number of members. The reason for the relatively low amount of young people in the church could possibly be found in the fact, that many of the towns young men and women are studying in other parts of the country, and maybe even in Uganda.

So in order to advertise and to make it more interesting for the choir members, they decided to arrange a Youth Choir Camp, which was held on 6th to 8th of February.

The training institute, situated in the rural area of Nshamba, has an increasing number of students due to good support from the government. They support the students by helping them with funding for boarding.

At present, there are 158 students on diploma and certificate level combined. These days they are doing their exams, and it is at times like this, that the school premises does not provide the necessary space for performing these exams. That has caused the school to plan an expansion in the form of a new lecture hall which will be able to accommodate ? students at the same time.
